Straw to Straw

Purpose

Manipulating straws and joint connectors helps in developing the small muscles of the hand. This activity is fun and allows the child to be creative.

Materials

Joint Connectors, Straws

Skills

Bilateral Hand Use, Crossing Midline, Hand Arches/Separation, Intrinsic Muscle Development, Tripod Grasp, Visual-motor

Description

Let the child plan and create different structures and shapes using the straws and the small joint connectors. You may want to cut some of the straws to a shorter length to promote tripod grasp.

To develop visual motor skills, motivate the child to form different shapes and letters.

great idea! if these joints are small enough to be bought by the bag -- do you happen to know what gauge to look for, since the smaller sized things are so similar?-- thank you for the advice!

@Darlene - I've added an image showing how a joint connector looks like. These can be purchased at any hardware store and are used to connect joints (straws in our case).
