Make a Puzzle

Contributed by Beth Endres, M.Ed., OTR/L

Purpose

This activity develops fine motor control (coloring within the lines of simple shape), attention to task and following of multi-step directions (following prompts such as "color the star yellow"), fine motor skills (cutting) and visual motor skills (putting puzzle together).

Materials

Construction Paper, Crayons, Paper, Ruler, Scissors

Skills

Bilateral Hand Use, Cutting, Fine Motor Control, Hand Arches/Separation, Tripod Grasp, Visual-motor

Description

Hand the child a xeroxed page of a holiday design (with multiple items to color) or draw a picture on the paper/construction paper. Use the ruler to draw horizontal and vertical lines for the child to cut (number of pieces depends on the child's age and skills). You can also draw curved or wiggly lines depending on your child's cutting abilities.

Have the child follow directions based on skill level. Start with simple directions and progress to harder instructions if appropriate.

Once all items are colored, have the child cut across the lines. Once cut, the child should reassemble the puzzle. Place the pieces in a ziplock bag to take home if desired.

Comments

Along the same line, I have at least 4 lines printed lengthwise on a piece of paper; curved, zig zag, straight, etc. and have the child cut the lines across the paper and reassemble on construction paper & glue, like a puzzle.
