Activity Name

Pick the Toothpick

Materials

Toothpicks, Styrofoam

Skills

Purpose

This activity promotes tripod grasp.

Description

Put a piece of styrofoam sheet on the floor or on a slanted surface and have the child push the toothpicks into the styrofoam (if the styrofoam is on the floor have the child lay prone and weight bear on his/her elbows). Give the child a shape, a letter, or a pattern to trace over in order to develop his/her visual motor skills.

I do something similar except I use cork-board squares and push-pins. There is a steel door where I work and I have some heavy duty magnet clips so I can attach the cork boards to the door and the student then works on a vertical surface. I will try it with the toothpicks on the floor and see how it compares.
