Activity Name

Magnadoodle

Materials

Magnadoodle

Skills

Purpose

This activity helps in developing pre-writing and writing skills.

Description

First, have the child explore the Magnadoodle by scribbling and drawing any thing they wish. To work on pre-writing skills ask the child to imitate or copy certain strokes such as horizontal line, vertical line, circle, cross, and X. For writing skills you can have the child imitate or copy letters and numbers.
To promote wrist extension and proximal stabilization, place the Magnadoodle on a vertical surface.

For students with weak hand muscles and a poor pencil grasp I have them write on the MagnaDoodle with a 1/2 inch long magnet that I removed from the back of a magnetic letter-then rounded the edges with a nail file. They have no choice but to hold it in either a pincher or a tripod so there are fewer redirects needed.
